The West Indies named its 15 man squad for the World Cup today. The squad reads Brian Lara (captain), Ian Bradshaw, Dwayne Bravo, Shivnarine Chanderpaul, Corey Collymore, Chris Gayle, Kieron Pollard, Daren Powell, Denesh Ramdin, Marlon Samuels, Ramnaresh Sarwan (vice captain), Lendl Simmons, Devon Smith, Dwayne Smith, Jerome Taylor.
Also named as reserves were Fidel Edwards, Sylvester Joseph, Dave Mohammed, Runako Morton, Darren Sammy.
There are no major surprises in the squad. Of note is that Marlon Samuels, backed by the WICB and West Indies players, is named despite the on-going investigation into his relationship with an Indian bookie. Congratulations also to Kieron (pronounced Ky-ron) Pollard, who at 19 is the youngest member of the squad and is enjoying a superb domestic season. Notable obmissions include the man who is probably the fastest pacer in the Caribbean (Edwards) and Runako Morton, who after his good form earlier last year has endured a stretch of rotten form.
Dwayne Smith is a Bajan favourite, but his recent form with the bat has been atrocious (averaging just over 7 in his last 21 ODIs). His prowess in the field and useful medium pace must have been a deciding factor. The selectors evidently opted for Smith's experience over up and coming all-rounder Darren Sammy.
